Feb 7 -- Jeff I finally got onto the web site and it really is fabulous. Reading some of those dedications really made me cry. Having been through the whole process with my 13 year old cousin and Alvaro's mom I know all the emotions and fears the family members go through when a loved one is diagnosed and being treated. I just want to say that I'm so proud of your and Kevin's efforts. It was a spectacular physical feat and a wonderful way to raise money and awareness for this very worthy cause. So many of us are so proud of you - for who you are and what you've done for others! Your coast to coast ride will continue to be an inspiration for a long time. I know I will look at and re-read the pages from the website again and again. Some time ago a friend sent me this poem and I leave it with you for a final bit of inspiration: "People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. When someone comes into our lives for a REASON, it usually means that person meets a need we have in our lives. They may seem like a godsend, and they are. .... I was so tired form doing a long ride the day before, then I thought, " Dude, you only rode one long day !" Coast 2 Coast in 24 days is simply amazing and the only engine has been your human bodies driven by your amazing minds. All for raising funds for a cancer cure. I am so proud of both of you. I am grateful for the inspiration which your personal dedication and commitment means to all of us who have been touched by cancer. When our two year old daughter, Jane Edith Marland, died of leukemia our world was totally shattered. We learned firsthand of the absolute heartbreak and unbelievable grief that the death o a child brings. Fundraising to help find the cure is the most important thing we can do and you have done that for over 3,000 miles with each turn of your wheels. Kevin, today as you dedicate this C.2.C. ride to your mother, Elizabeth Wallace's memory I know in my heart that she has traveled every mile with you along the 3,000 miles. She is as proud and blessed by having a son like you as any mother here on earth. You represent everything that is good, selfless and caring for others by this feat of strength and endurance. Jan 27 -- Jeff and Kevin, I want to say thank you for dedicating today's ride to me. Also for allowing so many people to be part of your journey through the website. I always have a Kleenex close at hand when I log on as there are always tears as I read how you are touching so many people of all ages. Great that you got to ride with Lance Armstrong. Good things happen to good people. This past week has brought once again made me realize how devastating this disease is. Last Wednesday a former co-worker, Mary Horner, underwent surgery at Toronto General for ovarian cancer. She was in the same wing of the hospital that I was almost 25 years ago when I had my surgery. Last night I learned that Mary had died earlier in the day.. On Friday morning I received a call that Diane Beatty. a member of our After 5 Christian Women's Group, had died of cancer which she had been fighting for seven years. I have just returned from the service to celebrate her life. Diane is the third member of our group to die of cancer within the last six months - Vicky Restoule and Monica Aitchison died in the summer and fall of 2000. All of these women were much to young to be taken from their loved ones. Your ride is almost over and tomorrow will be the day when family and friends will meet you on the beach at St. Augustine. We all wish we could be there in person but our spirits continue to be with you. Nephew dear I am so very, very proud of you and thank you again for letting me be a part of your dream. Jan 26 -- Hi Jeff: You are all on the home stretch - Congratulations!!! It was sure good to see your smiling face on the update pictures for the 26th - after your battle with food poisoning. I wanted to let you know that you were a terrific inspiration for me as I preached in a Brantford church this morning. I introduced my theme of "Standing at the Crossroads - Walk in the Light," by talking about your ride and some of the crossroads you have faced in the last 3 weeks. It proved to be an appropriate intro to my message as a family in that church had just found out this week that a member of their family in Maryland has cancer. The church helped the Brantford family members make the trip to Maryland to be with family there. Thank you for being my inspiration in such a powerful way today. Mom and Aunt Brenda were there - it was good I didn't look at them - because they were wiping away the tears as I spoke!!! We are all so proud of you, Kevin, Kenn, and all the team members fo! r all you've accomplished because of who you are! Tomorrow there are so many of us who would like to be there to cheer you on and welcome you at the end of the journey. Because we can't, I can only pray that the wind will be at your back and when you feel it you will think of us encouraging you and the team until the last pedal has been spun. Jan 26 -- What a team! Everyday, as I did my thing here at home in Mississauga, I thought of you all!! What an inspiration/perspiration to the whole "just do it" theme and what a supportive family to let you go to it! When we did our "hills" in spinning class, and I could barely keep at it for 6 minutes, our teacher Neal reminded us of your hills, climbing for 6 hours -- WOW! Jan 26 -- Hi Jeff and Kevin, Almost done!! Offf - your butts must be SO SORE!!! Glad you have some help pulling you. Too bad they can't sit on your saddles for you and push those pedals. Terry suggested I share with you my struggle with depression after I finished Camp Radiation five years ago. It also happens after big events - like the Olympics. Just something to be aware of when you finish. But I hope you just stay VERY HAPPY to be done. Hope you get healthy quickly, Jeff!! Keep on cranking. Tired after one hour, I've been wondering how you two go on to do another (no doubt tougher) hour after that; then another ... and another. Then another day .... and another. Jan 26 -- hey everybody, the final domestique has arrived. after two transfers and three planes, i am here, and wonder of wonders, my bike made it with me through all three airports. a special thanks to the staff at u.s. airways for helping me so much, and treating my bike with care. i'm looking forward to joining the peleton tomorrow, and doing my part to make this ride a success. i want to say hi to everyone at home. thanks to claire for getting up at five this morning to get my sorry butt to the airport, and thanks to sarah for the awesome gift. i will indeed "ride on". and a special thanks to my wife anne for all the love and support you have given me through the years. without it, i wouldn't have the strength to do these adventures. to the swiss chalet crew, have a baked potato for me. i'll see you all next week. till tomorrow, keep the rubber side down. i love you anne. i'll be home soon. ian
