Day 13, January 17, 2002
What a day!! Today was meant to be a transition day with new support staff, and a day to spent time with the Lance Armstrong Foundation staff, who are located here in Austin. We had a good ride into Austin in light rain on rolling terrain and were met outside of the city by David Stence and Andy White from the Lance Armstrong Foundation who rode out to join us. Then with about 25 miles to go the team split to ensure we got our new crew from the airport while I rode the last bit with Andy and David. Then the unbelievable happened; I met, by chance, Lance Armstrong himself who was out on a training ride with Chann McRae his teammate on US Postal. We rode side by side for about 10 miles talking about the importance of his fight for cancer and our contribution through the Coast to Coast ride for Cancer. What impressed me about meeting Lance is he knew about our ride, he knew my name, he knew about our website, and he thanked me for the effort we are putting into riding 3,200 miles in 24 days. I don't have many idols other than my family, but Lance is the exception. He lived up to my expectations today and gave me even more incentive to do this ride in style! We then met with the Lance Armstrong Foundation team in their offices where we were treated to some great food, and given a tour of their operations. I was touched by my conversation with Doug Ulman, a young man who is a three-time cancer survivor and takes care of Survivorship Services [ie where the money goes] for LAF. The passion he and the rest of the staff have for the LAF mission is inspiring. Today was dedicated to Michael Neibert who is a little boy fighting cancer. I thought a lot about my family and the strength of character the Niebert's have shown as a family fighting this disease. My thoughts and prayers are with them. Finally, my brother Kenn who has been our driver from day one leaves us today to return to his family. I will greatly miss him. He has been a source of strength for me and has done a miraculous job of keeping the whole team organized and on track. Wanda [his wife] thank you for your patience while Kenn has been away. Tomorrow we have a bit of climbing in the morning and then begin the flat ride to the coast! Jeff SCOTT'S UPDATE To my son Robbie (and onlookers) These guys rock! The tales you've read about their miles upon miles are faint interpretations of seeing first-hand the brilliant reality of being here. Jennifer and Ken are putting in long days filled with endless logistical challenges. Each has primary responsibilities; Jenn meal prep and massages; Kenn, driving and provisions. The list of housekeeping and secretarial tasks packs in like grease in a hub. Chrissy, when not running the video camera, reaches out to help the team in any way possible. My deep thought from this single day of riding, since one is required in this section, is that marvelous people seem to attract like-spirited. Many, it seems, travel in packs. Live life Robbie... it's all out there. I'm blowing you a kiss. Love, Dad KEVIN'S UPDATE A kinder, gentler day today was. A huge day though as far a as our trip goes and why we are doing it. Today we will be switching and adding support team members at the halfway point. My sister Alison, and friend Eric Jensen will be replacing Kenn Rushton, and giving some additional help to Jennifer Currie. They have a lot to learn and Kenn is busy as I write this showing them the ropes. Some of the Lance Armstrong Foundation team came out and meet us on our bikes today. With about 25 miles to go on the ride, I left to help with the transition events. Jeff continued on with the LAF team. Then in an incredible display of fate, Jeff ended up meeting Lance Armstrong who was out on a training ride with a member of his US Postal bike team. What an amazing opportunity! See Jeff's update for more information. We then met at the Lance Armstrong Foundation offices with the LAF staff. It was a great way to spend our transition day. After a great meal and some incredible swag, they helped refuel our spirits and gave us great encouragement to keep riding for such an important cause. Thinking of everyone at home and I miss you all. Love you Rose, Andrew & Jonathan. Kevin Wallace |
