Day 11, January 15, 2002

Stats for the day

Distance: each of us rode 187 KMS/116 MILES from Del Rio, Texas to Vanderpole, Texas [farther than our plan of Camp Wood]
Cumulative distance for trip: 2323 kms/1443 miles over 11 days
Total altitude climbed today [i.e. total climbs not including downhills]: 10,020 feet [second largest of entire trip]
Calories expended during ride: JEFF 6088/KEVIN 4897
Weather: clear sky but Southeast headwinds and crosswinds [question: what happened to the concept of the "westerly winds" as the prevailing winds]

Daily inspiration

Each day Diane Rushton & Jeff's kids Brooklyn and Skylar are sending the team inspirational messages to start their day.

The first part of the day was gradual incline into strong headwinds for the first 3 hours.

Entering what is called Texas Hill Country, which turned out to be 40 miles of brutal 400-500 foot ascents and descents.

We saw lots of wildlife today including some deer. (Inset) One of the many streams through the Texas Hill country. There were flood markers that show high water marks up to 6 feet above the road during flash floods.

Big effort on one of the many climbs.

Taking a break after one of the climbs from the valley floor.

Yes Kevin is King of the Mountain Climbs. Look at those thighs; I don't think they are real. Do you?
