Day 5, January 9, 2002

Stats for the day

Distance: each of us rode 200 KMS/124 MILES FROM Safford Arizona to Silver City New Mexico via let's just say a wild back route with one big mountain pass!!
Cumulative distance for trip: 1044 kms/648 miles over 5 days
Total altitude climbed today [i.e. total climbs not including downhills]: 9,500 feet [yikes!!]
Calories consumed durig ride: JEFF 6968/KEVIN 5638 [if you are wondering why the difference, it is age and the % the heart rates are to maximum during the day; it does not have anything to do with the fact that Kevin is better looking!!]
Weather: BEAUTIFUL & SUNNY 35 degrees in the morning and 55-60 degrees during the day

Daily inspiration

Each day Diane Rushton & Jeff's kids Brooklyn and Skylar are sending the team inspirational messages to start their day.

Daybreak in Safford, Arizona at the start of the epic day

One of the roads we took was very dangerous with a big downhill and no shoulders. Here we are with a nice Arizona police officer who went from trying to talk us out of going on the route to following us with flashing lights! Thanks again!!

The epic climb for the day [second biggest of the 24 days with the big one coming tomorrow!] Yes this is the closest I got to Kevin going up the mountain pass!! He had his way with me on the hill!!

Jeff & Kevin putting in the effort to get over the mountain pass

Success at the top of the climb as we reached the Arizona/New Mexico State line. Note the bullet holes in the sign; do you think there are guns here???

SUCCESS and the proof of it. The top number on the watch is the 9,500 feet of vertical we climbed. The bottom number on the bike computer is the 200 kms we did. Epic!!
