Crystal Wong Age: 18 (on June 12/03) of Brampton, ON
submitted by Albert Lee - Candlelighters Canada

Crystal was diagnosed on March 7, 1989, at this point her bone marrow was already packed with leukaemia cells. She underwent Protoccol C Chemotherapy for 3 years and 10 courses of Cranial Radiation. She has been in remission ever since and has completed her long-term follow-up at Sick Kids. Next year, she is going to be transferred over to Sunnybrook as an ‘adult’ for continued monitoring.

I can still remember playing a game called ‘statue’ when she needed to stay still for procedures. We would set the ‘bar’ at 20 seconds (usually the amount needed) and she would challenge each of us again and again.

During the initial 5 weeks, Crystal received numerous blood transfusions. In fact, sometimes it seemed like the only thing keeping her alive was the blood of others.

13 years in remission. She is now an avid snowboarder, and she swims regularly. She is also a lifeguard and swimming instructor at her pool.
