Name: Joseph Kure Age: 32
Toronto Ontario
Type of Cancer: Ewing’s Sarcoma of the Skull

Joseph was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma in 1993. He had no idea that a tumour was growing on the inside of his left skull invading parts of his brain. One day after a trip to Canada’s Wonderland, Joe felt strange and later that evening became delusional. After several days of testing, the doctors told Joe the bad news – he had cancer. Even worse was the news that it was a very aggressive type that typically results in limb amputation. Needless to say the entire family was upset – but Joe simply accepted this news and placed his fate in God’s hands. This was truly inspirational for his family and gave everyone hope that Joe would pull through. After surgery and several rounds of radiation and chemotherapy, there was no sign of the tumour. Joe was ecstatic! His life slowly returned to normal.

Unfortunately about a year later, doctor’s detected another growth in the same area of his skull, in addition to several small growths in his lungs. Again Joe’s family was quite upset, but he continued to be optimistic. After a second surgery and another round of radiation and chemotherapy, Joe recovered. Today, ten years later, he has resumed his life, and now is working for IBM Canada.

Highlights: (Memorable moments, turning points, favourite memories)
Joe’s acceptance of his cancer was truly courageous. His faith and optimism spread to his entire family and to all of the medical staff that worked with him throughout his ordeal. He always thought of others before himself. For example, during his recovery in hospital, his mother was crying and said "Why did this have to happen to you? Why not to me? You are still so young." Joe’s reply was simply "Mom, if you were sick, who would take care of me?" After waking up from his second operation in the recovery room, his first words were not of how he was, but if his sister was OK because he forgot to say bye to her before the operation. Joe always had a smile on his face – even when going in and then leaving the radiation treatment rooms he would joke with the technicians.

Lowlights: (Moments of courage, digging deep within)
Although Joe did not show it, he did suffer quite a bit. His hair loss and loss of appetite during his treatment took its toll. It was very hard for him to face his second surgery and subsequent treatment because he knew beforehand what he would be going through. When he arrived at the hospital, he was very scared, yet he did not show it and presented a very brave face. He continues to be reminded of his ordeal even today. His vision, hearing, and his sense of taste have been affected by the radiation therapy.

Current Status:
Joe’s cancer has now been in remission for almost 10 years. Although his body has suffered from the surgeries and cancer treatments that he received, Joe simply keeps on going.

Favourite Activity(s) now:
Joe is very much into Technology, and loves to play computer games and simulations in his spare time. He also is an avid Internet surfer who always keeps family and friends informed of the latest technological wonders.
